Who can enter?

Brake lights, headlights, taillights and indicators are all required.

All entrants must hold a driving license as per the Entrant Terms and Conditions. The entrant must present a physical or digital licence at time of scrutineering. The licence must be present, current and valid. If an entrant presents at scrutineering with no licence, we are unable to conduct scrutineering. Note that entrant transfers are not permitted at Scrutineering.

For those applying for a Temporary Permit, you will be required to produce your physical license to the Motor Vehicle Registry Staff at Scrutineering.

Current registration where the numberplate matches the VIN.

If an entrant vehicle is unregistered, a Temporary Permit can be obtained subject to Northern Territory Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) inspection and approval. This allows entrants to drive an unregistered vehicle on specific roads during Red CentreNATS as per the Temporary Permit.

Requirements for Temporary Permits will be released on the Red CentreNATS website. MVR will be onsite at scrutineering for all Temporary licence enquiries and processing.

Wheel weights must be removed for competition Burnouts / Drags.

All wheels (front and rear) must match. For example, if there are mags on front wheels and stock on the rear, the scrutineers will not pass the vehicle or will ask you to change the wheels. An exception to this is burnout and drag racing competitors. NOTE: if burnout or drag competitors are wanting cruise the streets, front and rear wheels must match.

If wheels protrude the body of the car (generally in a hot rod style vehicle), the car must be fitted with wheel guards.

Are compulsory for all burnout competitors – front and rear.

No visible belts, canvas or flat spots. Tyres need to be in serviceable condition.

Functioning brakes must be fitted - front and rear. Any exceptions to this requirement are as per the Competition Regulations and Event Supplementary Regulations. Further to that, when applying for a Temporary Permit, vehicles must meet the regulations of the Motor Vehicle Registry.

Fitted correctly and functioning for all seats front and rear. If your vehicle was manufactured before seatbelts were mandatory, you can’t compete in any Driving Events but may participate in cruising.

Secured and functioning – seats must be bolted in.

Tailshaft loops are recommended for burnout vehicles. Dependant on the vehicle performance and its modifications, tailshaft loops may be required for Drags entrants in accordance with the sanctioning body requirements.

A continuous system that extends past the last vehicle door or to the rear axle line. Any exhaust protruding on the side of the vehicle must point down. A cover deflecting the exhaust output in a downward direction is acceptable. To pass scrutineering, the exhaust must be with the vehicle. Open headers are permitted during drag racing and burnout competition only.

Firewalls are to isolate the driver from the engine compartment and fuel tank/cell. This includes station wagons and vans with fuel cells in the back of the vehicle. This can be achieved by making a metal cover and securing and sealing over any opening. Firewalls made of any flammable materials, including wood or plastic will not pass scrutineering.

Fuel tanks and cells must be separated from the cabin, of purpose-built construction, fixed securely with the correct brackets i.e., no ratchet straps or temporary fixtures. The fuel tank/cell must be sealed off from entering the cabin areas in the event of an accident or fuel spill.

Must be designed for automotive use and appropriately rated for the fuel being used.

With the correct battery securing devices (cable ties, ratchet straps will not pass).

The vehicle should not start in gear. The test process at scrutineering is the vehicle can only start in Park and Neutral only. If any gear other than Park or Neutral are selected and the engine turns over, the vehicle will fail scrutineering.

Be fitted with a throttle return mechanism which in the event of any throttle linkage or throttle system failure will close each throttle, no loose componentry etc

To pass scrutineering, a bonnet must be fitted. The only exemption to this rule is vehicles competing in Burnouts and during Burnout competition.

Any turbochargers protruding out of the bonnet must have a filter / screen over the inlet and heat wrap over the hot side of the turbo. Exhaust must be suitable, so it does not exit out of the side guards. Any exhaust protruding on the side of the vehicle must point down. A cover that directs the outlet down is acceptable.

Required for all blowers protruding from a bonnet.

Fire extinguishers are required for all vehicles. A minimum of 900g charged dry chemical extinguisher secured within the vehicle cabin. Vehicles competing in driving events must have the extinguisher mounted within the vehicle cabin.

Each driver and passenger must wear a fire suit meeting or exceeding SFI 3.2A/5 or FIA 8856:2000 as a minimum, or any other standards recognised by Motorsport Australia for burnout competition.
